Iran's oil refining capacity to hit 2m b/d by 2011: official

Iran's crude oil refining capacity is to reach two million barrels per day by 2011 through completion of projects currently underway on development of the country's refineries, an Iranian official said here Wednesday.

Head of Expert Studies for Refinery Affairs of the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company (NIORDC), Ali Salmassian, told IRNA that the capacity would hit 2.5 million barrels per day by 2016.

He said current nominal capacity of crude oil refining stands at 1.32 million barrels per day.

Pointing to projects currently underway abroad, the official said, "Total capacity of Iran's crude oil refining will reach 3.2 million barrels per day by 2021 by refining 650,000 barrels per day in Indonesia, Malaysia and Syria."

Salmassian stated that three refineries each with a capacity of 300,000, 180,000 and 100,000 barrels would be constructed in Iranian southern cities of Bandar Abbas and Shiraz and western city of Kermanshah, respectively while two other refineries with a capacity of 250,000 and 300,000 barrels would also be built in Malaysia and Indonesia, respectively.

He said crude oil refining capacity of Arak would reach 250,000 barrels per day (b/d) from its current 150,000 barrels by construction of a 100,000-barrel unit.

The official added a new 110,000-barrel refinery would be constructed in the northwestern city of Tabriz.

He said all oil products would be produced in Iran's refineries based on the European environmental standards as of the fiscal year of 2011, adding deals signed with foreign companies on producing oil products at a high quality would be materialized as of the next five years.
