Corporate summit in UAE to address environment

More than 120 business leaders from the Arab world will meet in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates on Thursday to debate means of integrating environmental considerations into their operations. The Arab Corporate Environmental Responsibility Summit will be held at the Emirates Palace hotel under the patronage of Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed, crown prince of Abu Dhabi and honorary chairman of Environment Agency, Abu Dhabi (EAD). It is being organized by the Arab Forum for Environment and Development (AFED) in cooperation with EAD. The summit is also supported by the UN Environment Program (UNEP) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).

During the conference, participants plan to discuss a declaration on Arab corporate environmental responsibility and cleaner production by industries. These discussions are intended by the organizers to pave the way toward developing adequate programs to ensure sustainable business practices.

Through the summit, organizers aim to instil the culture of environmental responsibility in business leaders in order to enable them to face global and regional challenges while competing in markets with fast-evolving environmental standards.

Participants also are scheduled to debate successful regional experiences. The debate will be followed by round table discussions covering four topics: energy efficiency and climate change; water issues; international standards; and interaction among business, governments and society.

Prominent international and regional figures who plan to address the summit include Shafqat Kakahhel, UN assistant secretary general and deputy executive director of UNEP; Mustafa Tolba, AFED's president and UNEP's former executive director; and Juerg Gerber, WBCSD's chief operations officer, along with CEOs of regional companies such as Saudi Aramco, Aluminium Bahrain, and Solidere.
