Our Say...: Israelís war

THE REGION is on the brink of war. Although Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has long denied it, his actions and that of his military on the West Bank and Gaza speak volumes about Israelís real intention to intensify their war in the area. This week there was even more bloodshed leaving many being killed. But this time it was different. Israel upped the ante. Their initial missiling of Palestinian police stations in Gaza followed by the bombarding of Hamas headquarters in Nablus (killing eight including two children) is a crystal clear proof Sharon and his men only understand the language of war and violence. The Israeli state is in the midst of internal tantrums. Its continued policy of assassination suggests Israel is doing its best to dissect Palestinian society, regardless of consequences. Israel is effectively waging war against the Palestinian territories. It wants to end the Intifada their wayóthe violent way they understand best. While many have said and continue to say this is a shortsighted policy for a long-term problem best solved at the negotiating table, it seems to be falling on deaf Israeli ears. Despite the fact they understand the importance of communication and embarking upon an international public relations campaign, it is now becoming abundantly clear Israelis are only interest in selling their myopic policy to the world. Sharon wants to guile the world into believing his militaryís killing, destruction and assassination of ordinary Palestinians is for the good of Israel. The region is presently undergoing a particularly turbulent time, but it appears that this is "business as usual" in this part of the world; at least as far as Israel is concerned. Sharonís PR campaign may not work. World public opinion is generally changing in favor of settling the Palestinian-Israeli conflict once and for all. It appears Israel may not in the end care.

At present Israel is the one raising the temperature in the region. Its new assault on the Palestinian people is made by careful degree so as not to provoke either the international community or the Arab states. Such a strategy is finely calculated and dangerous for the Palestinians. It means they are on their own and will remain so for the future. It is up to the Arab world to finally react and stop the carnage in the Palestinian territories. It is up to the Europeans to put greater pressure on the Israelis. And it is up to the Americans to move in and become effective partners in the peace process. That is if we can still talk about this in a negotiating framework. The region is teetering on the brink of war. If no real political solutions are found and there is no political will or foresight available then a 4th Arab-Israeli war could be just around the corner. Compliments of Ariel Sharon and his security cabinet, of course.
