Medical services in Jordan comprise 8 percent or JD 375 million of the GDP. Ministry of Health sources reveal the public sector spends JD 172 million on medical services and the private sector about JD 195 million. About 25 percent of these costs are for medicines.

* Medical services in Jordan comprise 8 percent or JD 375 million of the GDP. Ministry of Health sources reveal the public sector spends JD 172 million on medical services and the private sector about JD 195 million. About 25 percent of these costs are for medicines.

* The Customs Dept., made JD 793.1 million in the year 2000. About 22 percent of this was from fees and fines. The revenue makes up 44 percent of the national income. The revenue of the Customs department is expected to increase this year thanks to the Sales Tax.

* Jordanís trade with Iraq via the Food-for-Oil deal hit the $2.23 billion mark. This makes Jordan the second largest partner after Egypt with a total of $2.48 billion. The United Arab Emirates is third with $2 billion. Since the UN-led program was launched in December 1996 Iraq made $17 billion in trade with Arab neighbors.

* Al Hussein Industrial Estate in Karak is seeing the construction of a new $28.5 million textile factory. The project is expected to start producing textiles and fabric products in October. It will provide 5000 new jobs for Jordanians. Al Hussein Estate is in the process of expanding after the Jordan Industrial Estate Corp. approved a tender for 10,000 additional square meters last week. This additional space will be used for more industrial and commercial facilities.

* Arab White Cement Co. increased sales in 2000 by 10.7 percent to 109,000 tons. This was a 7.3 percent increase from last year, leaving 2000 tonís surplus available for sale. Syria was the largest importer of the companyís white cement. They imported 54,000 tons. The local market purchased 52,000 tons.

* The Zai Water Treatment Plant is set to receive a new $80 million to improve its facilities. The installation will be in two phases. The first phase, currently underway, is expected to be completed in November. The second phase should be completed in December 2002. The new station will pump 45 million cubic meters each year. This will increase the overall pumping of Zai to 90 million cubic meters annually, effectively doubling its capacity.

* Jordanian insurance premiums in 2000 increased by 4.6 percent from 1999 to JD 104.3 million. Pay-outs, though, remained the same as of 1999 at JD 64.6 million. However, the industry is experiencing heavy losses today. But according to the Jordan Insurance Federation these losses will be offset by the passage of the new Insurance Law, which makes insurance mandatory on personal property.

* The Bank of Jordan made JD 5.3 million in profits last year. Deposits in 2000 increased by 10.5 percent to JD 525.3 million. The bankís capital increased to JD 26.2 million. Shareholding rights went up to 25.6 percent to JD 44 million when the Bank distributed 5.2 million in complimentary shares to shareholders.
