CRAIG BARRETT, president and chief executive officer of Intel Corporation, pledged his company’s full support to Jordan’s drive to develop IT and knowledge based industries. Barrett delivered his message to His Majesty King Abdallah II.

During an audience with the King, Barret congratulated Jordan on becoming a role model in this field for the Middle East. “Jordan’s position in IT clearly reflects the vision of HM King Abdallah and his tremendous efforts to drive the deployment of the Internet in the Middle East,” said Barrett. Barrett also spoke to Intaj, Jordan’s IT association, and senior government officials, including Dr Fawaz Zu’bi, Minister of Post and Communications.
“Intel is one of the major players in the world contributing to the development of education and in introducing programs to help child development,” said Dr Zu’bi. Barrett said Intel will work with the Education Ministry and University of Jordan officials to discuss Intel’s support in establishing an e-business lab at the University of Jordan in the near future.

Later in the day, Gilbert Lacroix, Intel manager for the Middle East and North Africa, told the press that Barret had selected Jordan as his first stop in the Middle East. “We are very impressed with the level of commitment and co-operation between the private and public sectors in Jordan with regard to IT, which we haven’t seen elsewhere in the region,” he told The Star. As for the e-lab, it will help students develop their knowledge of e-business and may even act as an incubator for startups. Intel will also support the “250 Thousand PC” program launched by the Ministry of Post and Communications.
