Talal Abu-Ghazaleh and co and Cambridge International examinations to develop arab skills awards in information technology

Joint venture will transform teaching and learning of IT across the Arab world In an unprecedented step towards building a pan-Arab knowledge society and thereby narrowing the IT divide, Talal Abu-Ghazaleh and Co. International (TAGI) has launched, in association with Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) and the Arab Knowledge Management Society (AKMS), an Arabic version of the Cambridge Skills Award in Information Technology.

Covering key office packages in electronic communication, spreadsheets, word-processing, databases and presentations, the Arabic IT Skills Award is the world's most advanced computer based assessment package and the first qualification of its kind to be launched within the region.

TAGI, CIE and AKMS have completed the signing of an agreement that prepares prospective candidates for Cambridge IT Skills Award tests in Arabic following the delivery in Arabic of IT training courses through a TAGI/AKMS internet website supported with additional learning resources. Individuals who successfully attempt the assessment after a course of study will be awarded the Cambridge Skills Award in Information Technology (Arabic). TAGI will be responsible for the management of the qualification and will conduct on-demand electronic IT Skills testing, whilst the provision of on-line teaching support and tutoring will be conducted by AKMS. CIE has supplied the original English language documents including syllabuses and the tests themselves. Translation of the Awards into Arabic has been conducted by TAGI and supervised by CIE.

Paul Lewis, CIE Director for the Middle East, North Africa and India commented that "By working closely with TAGI and AKMS in the launch of this qualification, we have developed an assessment which will significantly increase the profile of all of our work within the region, as well as providing students with a real opportunity to gain the skills necessary to contribute effectively to the wider development of Arab Society. The strategic collaboration between ourselves, the global standard in international education assessment and TAGI, with their proven commitment to Arab education along with AKMS' technical expertise is one which, I'm sure, all parties will find extremely beneficial."

The Arabic language version of the Cambridge Skills Award in Information Technology will be piloted from October 2001 and will become widely available from January 2002 in a number of approved centres across the Middle East. Students interested in taking the Award should contact TAGI for more information.

Editors note: Talal Abu-Ghazaleh and Co. International (TAGI) is an Arab training provider and aims to offer the Award in the following countries: Algeria, Bahrain, Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen. TAGI will be responsible for the management and distribution of the Arabic IT Skills Award in these countries. TAGI's strategic marketing plan is expected to result in the registration of 1 million students for the Award in the Arab world within the first 10 years.

The Arab Knowledge Management Society (AKMS) is an Arab NGO focused on contributing to the Arab region's socio-economic development through capacity building in the areas of management, human resources, information technology, and information management, with a focus on bridging the digital divide between the Arab region and the world's developed countries.

Cambridge International Examinations is part of the University of Cambridge and has provided a range of high quality and internationally recognised examinations, assessments and services to over 165 countries since 1863.
