* The privatization of Royal Jordanian (RJ) is stopped for the moment. President of the Privatization Commission Adel Al Qdah said the political turbulence in the region has forced the government to postpone the RJ privatization until further notice. He said the government failed to find a strategic partner to buy 49 percent of the airline shares. Proposals from the local private sector are currently being discussed by the government. It, meanwhile, is about to privatize the Jordan Supply Co. Qdah noted the government-led JD 40 million-company, which replaced the former Ministry of Supply, will be evaluated by a group of advisors to allow it privatization.

Itís annual financial statement showed the bank gave 43 loans in 2000 at JD 5 million, a 73.3 percent reduction over 1999. Mifleh Aqel, IDBís chairman, said the losses were an outcome of the swift changes in the bankís policies to conform with Central Bankís instructions. The bankís annual budget declined by 14 percent to JD 132.2 million, while shareholdersí rights were reduced to JD 36.5 million.

* Shareholding companies at the Amman Stock Exchange increased their profits by 8 percent to JD 250 million last year. Non-Jordanian investments at the stock market also increased by JD 1.6 million to JD 4 million in the first four months of this year, thatís about 42 percent of the marketís volume.

* The Chambers of Industry were given till mid-June to draft a law to develop the industrial and commercial chambers in the Kingdom. Sources at the Ministry of Trade and Industry said the draft will facilitate the chambers confirmation with WTO requirements. The law also aims to promote the local industrial sector.

* Investments in Jordanís construction sector is worth JD 500 million. The Kingdom witnesses each year the construction of 38,000 apartments to meet with the rapid increase in Jordanís demographic rate.

* Chinese investments in Jordan are worth $200 million, more than 65 percent in the commercial sector. Chinese Embassy officials noted these investments will increase in the coming years, especially in the IT and industrial sectors. The Aqaba Special Economic Zone witnessed last week the launching of a marine route between China and Jordan to boost Chinese trade relations with the Kingdom.

* American Life Insurance Co. (ALICO) made JD 2 million in profits last year. The company earned revenues worth JD 3.4 million from its insurance policies, about 90 percent of which were from ALICOís investments in the sector.
