The Amman Stock Exchange (ASE) is launching online trading. The new venture will be launched jointly between the ASE and the Jordan Kuwait Bank (JKB). Abdel Karim Al Kabariti, JKB chairman, said JKBís customers will have the opportunity to open accounts, buy/sell shares and convert money through the web.

* Jordan is re-activating its 1978 Trade Agreement with Iraq rather than signing a new one. Minister of Trade and Industry Wasif Azar said the two governments are discussing ways to enhance Jordanian exports to Iraq. Jordan is to take part next month in an Arab commercial meeting in Baghdad to promote inter-Arab trade.

* The Kingdom is also promoting its trade relations with Algeria and Yemen, according to sources at the Ministry of Trade and Industry. Trade relations including medical, commercial, industrial and educational fields. Jordanís trade volume with Yemen is estimated at JD12 million, while Algeriaís trade with Jordan stands at $25 million.

* The Ministry of Labor made JD20 million in revenues last year from issuing 120,000 work permits to foreign workers, which was a decrease of JD5 million over last year. The number of foreign workers in Jordan decreased this year by 30,000.

* The Industrial Development Bank is undergoing renovation. Mifleh Aqel, chairman of the bank, said the bankís main objective is to upgrade mechanisms and loaning rules. With more than 35 years in operation, the bank provided last year JD5 million in loans.

* The Information Technology sector in Jordan makes about $60 million in sales each year. A study by the Jordan Investment Board stated that non-Jordanian investors in the IT sector can own 100 percent shares of their investments, without the need to have Jordanian investors. The study noted the IT sector in Jordan is attracting many new companies each year, with an annual increase of 15 percent. Exports from the local IT market are estimated at $7 million, and are expected to double next year.

* Al Safi Salt Co. is bearing JD15.5 million in debts. The government is planning to sell the company to the Jordan Phosphate Mines Co. Samir Al Habashneh, Al Safiís chairman, said his company has increased its annual production by 50 percent to 750,000 tons. The company also sold two of its production lines to the Arab Potash Co. at JD6 million.

* The Jordan Electricity Co. will increase its capital to JD40 million. The company has projects this year worth JD15.4 million, including the improvement of power generating stations in several districts of Amman.
