Jordanís oil bill for January and February increased this year by 11 percent to JD 40 million. Jordan is to import five million barrels of oil and oil products from Iraq at $600 million. This is an increase of $100 million over last year. Jordan is buying each oil barrel from Iraq at $21.

* The government will implement a new four-year reform program in 2002. Ministry of Planning sources said the new program will focus on reducing unemployment and poverty in the Kingdom. The sources also noted the new reform program will include a complete revision of economic relations between Jordan and other Arab countries. The unemployment rate in Jordan is estimated at 25 percent, while poverty is about 14.5 percent of the population.

* US aid to Jordan in the past 10 years was $3.1 billion, including technical and economic assistance. The US also slashed $700 million off Jordanís debts. Military assistance in the last decade was $804.5 million. Last week, Jordan obtained $75.3 million aid from the US to upgrade its economic sector. The loan will also finance the governmentís plan to mobilize more job opportunities for Jordanians. The US has allocated $150 million to support Jordanís economy this year.

* Tourism in Jordan makes up 12 percent of the gross domestic product, estimated at JD 720 million. Tourists and visitors coming to the Kingdom increased last year by 6 percent to 1.4 million. Ministry of Tourism is allocating JD 20 million this year to re-activate the tourism sector.

* The National Portfolio Co (NPC) at the Amman Stock Exchange sold all of its shares at the US stock markets. The decision was made after the mounting losses last year, due to the downward fall in US share prices. Losses are estimated at JD 352,000. NPCís assets were JD 5.1 million last year, a decrease by JD 3 million over 1999.

* Ministry of Water is to issue a tender worth JD 1.5 million to purify the King Talal Dam from sediment and residues. The Ministry is currently conducting a JD 5 million-project to purify springs and wells in the Salt area. The US Agency for International Development is financing the two projects.

* Jordan Phosphate Mines Co. will supply Kamira-Potash Co. with phosphate, ammonia and phosphoric acid to produce chemical fertilizers. Kamira-Potash Co. is constructing a $105 million-factory in the Aqaba Special Economic Zone to produce 225,000 tons of fertilizers each year.

* Investments at the Social Security Corp. (SSC) increased this year by 13.5 percent to JD 1.3 billion. The corporation has investments in the tourism sector worth JD 39.5 million. The corporation is expected to make this year JD 100.86 million in revenues from investments. The corporation denies rumors that it has investments outside Jordan.

* Jordan Metal Co. made JD 2.1 million in profits last year, increasing by 50 percent over 1999. The company sold goods worth JD 18.6 million, and has assets worth JD 18 million. It exported 30,000 tons of metal to Iraq last year and is expected to double that this year.
