Business Scene

* Jordanians working abroad transferred more than $1 billion in remittances to the Kingdom in the first half of 2002. This is an increase of 5 percent over the same period last year. A statement by the Central Bank indicated these remittances were made by the 400,000 Jordanians living in the Gulf states and the US. Jordanian remittances make up 12 percent of the GDP, and witnessed a gradual increase over the past decade.

* The Jordan Engineers Association (JEA) is paying around JD 2.4 million in pensions. More than 1300 engineers are benefiting from the JEA's pension scheme. The association's pensions fund stands at JD 70 million, and every engineer over 50 is eligible for a pension. The association's fund made JD 9 million in revenues, including investments. Its annual revenues are expected to reach JD 13 million by the end of this year.

* The Ministry of Public Works is currently working on developing new roads around the Kingdom at a cost of JD 22.5 million. These roads are in the Amman, Balqa'a and Irbid governorates. The Jordan Highway is one of these and is expected to be completed in 2004. It aims to facilitate traffic between Amman and the northern governorates. The Ministry is developing the highway's trail, from Amman's northeastern districts to Jerash and Irbid. About 20 percent of the highway has been completed.

* The Customs Dept is revising its evaluation procedures on imported goods. Mahmoud Qtaishat, the department's director, said new procedures would be brought in to the evaluation system to facilitate the customization of property. The new procedures also aim at providing treatments of all the goods and vehicles that enter the Kingdom. Custom duties over the last few years witnessed a gradual decline, which meant a sharp decrease in public revenues.

* The Social Security Corp had JD 1.66 billion in assets in the first half of 2002, an 8 percent increase over the same period of last year. This means it has a surplus of JD 11 billion every month. The corporation's investments make up about JD 22 million in revenues, while its operational expenses stand at JD 11 million.

* Development projects in Kerak and Irbid governorates are moving steadily. The government spent JD 18 million on the Kerak project with the same amount being spent in Irbid. More than JD 53 million was allotted for Kerak this year to undertake 180 projects. In Irbid, there are 330 projects worth 71.8 million for 2002. Projects in the two governorates are in education, health, infrastructure and social development.

* Trade volume between Jordan and Saudi Arabia stands at $210 million, half of which is in Saudi exports to Jordan. More than 40 percent of investments in the Aqaba Special Economic Zone are owned by Saudi investors. Many Saudi businessmen, who were members of the trade delegation visited Jordan last week, expressed willingness to have more partnerships with their Jordanian counterparts in commercial and industrial sectors.
