Business Scene

On the rise
* Arab International for Education and Investment has made a net profit of JD 5.76 million for 2002. This is slightly down on the 2001 profit figure of JD 5.328 million. Nevertheless, its incoming revenues for last year were JD 22.1 million with its operational costs reaching JD 14 million. And hence 20 percent of the profit, that is the company capitalization, were distributed among its shareholders.

Profits for Jordanian phosphates
* Jordanian phosphates made a profit of JD 7.5 million in 2002. This is a large leap on 2001 when it made a profit of only JD 4 million. The company has managed to overturn its losses of JD 128 million in the year 2000 into health profits. The international phosphate market last year was a tough one with prices standing at $33.5 per ton compared to $35.5 per ton in 2001.

Increasing capitalization
* The Finance and Export Bank also made healthy profits of JD 5.57 in 2002, that is a 10 percent increase on 2001, its operational profits stood at JD 14.48 million. Because of this the Export and Finance Bank decided to increase its capitalization from JD 30 million to JD 34.5 million.

Stocks and shares
* Itís always nice to talk about stocks and shares. The National Portfolio for Financial Securities is speeding ahead in the stock market and by implication, the economy as a whole. In 2002, it made profits of JD 32,000. The National Portfolio ranks 14 among the companies trading at the Amman stock market. Last year its value of stock market trading registered a JD 62 million high, about 3.2 percent of the total circulated shares at the stock market floor. The company did very well this year since its losses stood at JD 610,000 dinars in 2001. Its profits this year could be a general reflection of the state of the stock market in spite of the deteriorating regional situation that has finally ended in a war on Iraq. So in a sense the market is holding its own.

Confidence building
* Al Theqa for Financial Investments distributed JD 921,000 of the profits it made to its shareholders. This is 6 percent of its overall capitalization of JD 15,35 million. The company director Dr Mohammed Said Al Nabulsi said the company made good progress despite the difficulties the region is going through. He said the company made net profits of JD 1,443 million in 2002, slightly up on previous year of JD 1,432 million. Its incoming revenues last year registered at JD 2.89 million.
