Jordan Telecom Completes Fiber Optic Cable Link between Kingdom and Iraq

Minister of Information and Communications Technology HE Dr. Fawaz H. Zubi and Jordan Telecom CEO Laurent Mialet announced the completion of installing fiber optic cable link between Jordan and Iraq which was executed by Jordan Telecom and the Telecom and Post Iraqi Public Company. The project is the result of coordination between the telecom ministries of both countries. Zubi praised the efforts of Jordan Telecom in completing this project swiftly assuring that Jordan has and always been concerned by the welfare and economic wellbeing of the two peoples (Iraq & Jordan)

On his part Jordan Telecom CEO added that this cable will enable the Kingdom to act as a transit point for traffic from Iraq to the International Sea Network FLAG via the port city of Aqaba.

Mialet commended efforts by the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology in bringing this vital project to light, adding that “the cable would help to enhance communication channels between Jordan and Iraq and increase the capacity of data transfer via the Aqaba link.

Mialet also said that the project, which comes as an addition to the Company’s regional projects that are currently underway, gives Jordan Telecom an edge as a regional service provider in view of the mounting competition the sector is witnessing.

The project, extending over 400kms on Jordanian territory, includes digital communications equipment that uses SDH technology with a 622 MBPS capacity, scalable to 2.5 GBPS.

The project also provides communications services to the Eastern part of the Kingdom and covers the needs of Internet Service Providers along the route from Amman to the Iraqi borders.

Jordan Telecom is linked to neighboring countries through fiber optic cables that ensure the flow of communication between Jordan and Arab states via a number of options, including the Sea Cable FLAG, and the Terrestrial Satellite Station in Baq’aa which is connected to the United Arab Emirates Switches.
