Sun finally settles in DIC

After operating in the region for more than 15 years, Sun finally moved into it’s new US$1.5 million regional headquarters to the Dubai Internet City (DIC) today, which will house more than 75 staff members and also features a Java Software lab and a demo centre of it’s solutions.

Currently, Sun MENA represents the fastest-growing region within Sun’s larger Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) territory. EMEA constitutes about 30% of Sun's US$12 billion global revenue in 2003. The company has two similar offices in Saudi Arabia and one in Cairo, Egypt for the region. Prior to the new DIC office, Sun based it's operations from Karama in Dubai for more than nine years.

“The regional market has shown robust signs of growth around demand for solutions, and we are expecting that investment levels will remain strong in the coming months,” said Elie Simon, president, Sun EMEA.

“The new iWork environment is ideal for our sales, marketing and traveling staff as all they need to do is a book an office space and get to work at DIC or work from anywhere in a secure environment,” says Graham Porter, marketing manager, SUN MENA.

Sun’s new DIC headquarters is based around the company’s iWork strategy, which enables more than 75 employees to access a secure hot-desk environment and allowing them to leverage available workstations and conference rooms via their Java smart-cards. The new office which is powered by more than US$500,000 worth 24-way Sun servers and systems, has less than 5% of its employees with fixed desks or cubicles.

It also features a Java lab and an interactive demonstration centre for partners and customers, which will operate in conjunction with the iForce centre, run by Sun's regional partner, Tech Access.

“Over recent months we, together with our channel development partner Tech Access, have made considerable business gains. The new Sun iWork facility will allow us greater flexibility and mobility than ever before in meeting customer needs,” says Mehmet Iyimen, managing director, Sun MENA.

Recent customer wins in the region include: Saudi Arabian National Guards Health Affairs, which replaced its Microsoft environment with 1,500 SunRay client desktop systems and 4,000 StarOffice desktop computing licenses; regional conglomerate Al Yousuf, which implemented a comprehensive Sun-based data centre solution; Aluminum Company of Egypt, one of the region’s key producers of aluminum materials, which has deployed a Sun-based software and hardware solution cluster and storage area network to support the company’s Oracle E-Business Suite implementation.

“With the region’s IT solutions market growing exponentially, DIC offers a strategic base to tap these rapidly emerging opportunities. Sun brings a wealth of regional customer expertise and its broad technology vision to the DIC community,” says Dr Omar Bin Sulaiman, CEO of DIC.
