int@j and University of Yarmouk sign the “Center of Excellence” agreement

Representing the private sector, Jordan’s IT association – int@j today drew up a fundamental agreement with the University of Yarmouk aimed at incubating performing students to best shape them for serving the sector’s technical needs, and leapfrog into a knowledge-based economy.

Signed with the university’s Center of Excellence at the Hijjawi College, the agreement is devoted to enhancing the collaboration between academia and business stakeholders towards scaling to global standards of excellence. Co-sponsored by the USAID-Funded AMIR Program, int@j is rendering financial assistance to establishing the entrepreneurial “Center of Excellence” with the aim of developing the capacity and capability of Jordanian universities to provide the training necessary for molding young Jordanians into certified IT professionals.

“The project is a step forward to establishing an entrepreneurial center that serves regional ICT market needs. Our graduates will have a better understanding of workplace interactions and will gain practical skills that will gear them for the ICT job market and for spinning off small businesses”, said Aiman Mazahreh, head of the int@j Human Resources Development committee.

In addition to its twenty thousand US dollar contribution (USD $ 20K), int@j will support the “Center of Excellence” by drawing business support and encouraging its member companies to interact with the facility and benefit from its setup. Companies will be encouraged to develop some of their software packages there at a relatively low cost, and directly enhance the practical skills of the students without having to go through the dilemma of physically placing them at their companies for practical training at the end of each educational semester.

Furthermore, int@j is aiming at soliciting the support of its member companies in planning subsidized training courses that will offer ICT graduates the skills they need to succeed in the workplace.

“The primary purpose of the center is to promote creativity and innovation among students through transforming their skills into real-life products utilized in the marketplace, working in a real business-like environment and on real corporate projects,” Said Dr. Fayez Khasawneh/ President of Yarmouk University.

“On a business level, the center will provide the enabling environment where software applications and products can be developed cost effectively, and where student training requirements can be conveniently met by companies.” He added.

The Center of Excellence is going to enhance personal competency and research capabilities through practical training in problem solving and participation in project-based learning activities, it will also play a significant role in developing the professional understanding of workplace interactions, team work and technical skills, in addition to keeping students abreast updated technologies.
