University of Yarmouk takes the lead in implementing ICT skills development recommendations

In support of the cooperation that the Information Technology Association of Jordan Ė int@j is fostering between the business sector and academia in order to enhance the skills of Jordanís IT graduates and bridge the existing gap between academic curricula and corporate ICT standards, an int@j delegation visited Yarmouk University last week to tap upon the efforts being exerted by the university towards scaling the skills of its graduates to global standards of excellence.

The main objective of the meeting was to visit the recommendations drafted last April in in@jís workshop on ICT educational issues held under the patronage of His Excellency Dr. Issam Zabalawi, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and featuring Secretary General of MOICT Nadia Al-Saad among university deans and key industry stakeholders. Dr. Fayez Khassawneh, president of Yarmouk University, said the institution is committed to supporting contemporary ICT business requirements and improving the career prospects of its graduates by enhancing the technical know-how of IT students, as well as developing their soft skills and non-technical qualifications.

The university has taken immediate action in mandating the successful completion of the TOEFL, IELTS or any similar English language examination assigned by the institution as an obligatory pre-requisite for all computer science and computer engineering students beginning the first semester of 2004/2005.

Vice President Dr. Hisham Gharaybeh pointed out that optional extra curricular courses will be added to the syllabus so that students can enhance their soft skills such as communication & presentation skills, project management ...etc and to gain an added advantage in communication, presentation or interpersonal capabilities among other key talents that can boost their career prospects locally and abroad. Also preset at the meeting was Dr. Labib Kahdra, Dean of the Hijjawi College that hosts Jordanís first-of-its-kind ICT center of excellence. Jointly funded by int@j and the USAID-funded AMIR program, the center of excellence is going ensure that future graduates are geared towards contributing more effectively in the knowledge based economy of the future.

The university is motivating its students to obtain professional certifications from accredited technology leaders like Microsoft, Cisco, Oracle and IBM by exchanging those certifications with equivalent credit hours.

Head of int@jís Human Resources Committee Ayman Mazaherh said that Yarmouk is becoming the example for other universities and academic institutions enforcing such attempts to fulfill cutting-edge business requirements and improve the employment prospects of the thousands of Jordanian IT graduates that are expected to enroll in the job market within the coming few years.

Representatives from int@jís Human Resources Committee accompanied Mr. Mazahreh in the meeting; Duha Abdelkhaleq, Omar Jarrah, Nabil Fayoumi and Rula Habesh.
