Budget 2005 to sustain growth

* The 2005 fiscal budget is expected to run a deficit rate of 3.3 percent, according to Minister of Finance Mohammad Abu Hammour. He said the government has outlined next year’s budget “to meet the necessary requirements of all public institutions and enhance reforms in the public sector”. Abu Hammour noted that the government is committed “to sustain the economic growth that it achieved in recent years and promote it through better procedures and financial strategies”.

Trade deficit persists

* Jordan’s trade deficit rose in the first eight months of this year by 42 percent to JD 1.76 billion, compared to the same period of last year. A recent study by the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation indicated that Foreign Trade witnessed rapid growth in said period by 36 percent to JD 4.6 billion, while imports increased by 37.3 percent to JD 3.57 billion. The US was Jordan’s biggest importer at JD 449 million, followed by Iraq at JD 254 million. Saudi Arabia was Jordan’s biggest exporter at JD 732.2 million, followed by China at JD 310.3 million.

More American, European aid to Jordan

* The US allotted JD 250 million ($350 million) in direct aid to Jordan in 2005, according to Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Bassem Awadallah. He said the American aid is planned for supporting Jordan’s Social-Economic Transformation Program for the coming two years. Awadallah noted that the Kingdom would also receive 140 million euros in European aid for the coming year, including 30 million euros that the European Union has approved for the last quarter of 2004. The other 110 million euros, said Awadallah, would go to finance the development of small- and medium-sized enterprises in Jordan.

RJ allies with 4 Arab airlines

* Five Arab carriers, including Royal Jordanian Airlines, are to form soon an alliance to coordinate their operations worldwide. The other four carriers are Saudi Airlines, Middle East Airlines, Egypt Air and Gulf Air. Samer Majali, RJ’s CEO, said the alliance aims to develop new action plans for the concerned carriers to coordinate their efforts through a network of activities to enhance the industry, both regionally and internationally. The five carriers were among the 17 Arab airlines that participated last week at the Dead Sea in the two-day ‘Arab Air Carriers Organization’ conference.

Iraq-Jordan Free trade zone

* A new free trade zone is currently under construction at the Jordanian-Iraqi borders, and is scheduled to be ready by the end of November. The zone occupies an area of 2000 dunums and would provide facilities to host a variety of investments, both in commerce and industry. The zone would also enhance trade between Jordan, Iraq and neighboring countries.
