* Congestion eases at Aqaba seaport

• Clearance work at the containers terminal in Aqaba seaport improved this week soon after the installation of the five new cranes that were purchased from Indonesia last month. According to the Danish ABM Company, which runs the Aqaba seaport, output has increased by 29 percent since it first took charge in June. The company said that the clearance would be further enhanced after the end of the holy month of Ramadan. The new cranes came after weeks of sluggish clearance procedures at the Aqaba seaport, which hindered efforts to end the congestion at the containers terminal.

* Jordanian-Indian trade flourish

• Indian investments in Jordan reached JD 31 million, divided among various sectors including mining and textiles. However, Hamdi Tabbaa, president of the Jordanian Businessmen Association, said the value of Jordan’s exports to India rose in the first eight months of this year to over JD 72 million. While Jordan exports phosphates, fertilizers and potash to India, it also imports Indian garments, spices, vehicles and meat.

• Jordanian exports of pharmaceuticals are expected to reach $220 million by the end of 2004, according to the General Statistics Department (GSD). A recent GSD report noted that the Kingdom’s pharmaceutical exports to foreign markets increased in the first eight months of 2004 by 20 percent, compared to the same period of 2003, and is expected to maintain its rising trend.
