int@j Hosts First Information Security Awareness Seminar

The Information Technology Association of Jordan (int@j) concluded yesterday a seminar that aimed at building awareness about Information Security and its impact on the Jordanian business market. This one-day event highlight to representatives from Jordan’s ICT and Financial sectors the different aspects of Information Security and the importance of accentuating it within different institutions.

Addressing Information Security from a managerial aspect as opposed to technical aspect was one of the main objectives of this seminar. Recent growth in internet threats such as viruses and computer crimes have changed the way people view internet security and increased the need for well-defined policies that are heavily-adhered to. These issues are no longer solely the responsibility of the company technical departments. In order to have effective information security procedures, organizations need to re-align their information security with their business objectives.

Ra’ed Bilbessi, Chairman of int@j, kicked off the seminar with a general overview of the significance of Information Security, its threats and vulnerabilities and the technologies that are available to reduce the risks of operating in today’s marketplace.

Bilbessi also stressed on the importance of enabling businesses and financial institutions with the correct Information Security regulations and procedures. “Today's enterprises need information that is secure, always available, and unfailingly trustworthy so that they can keep their business up, running, and growing, no matter what happens. This is the information integrity challenge.” he said during his opening speech.

Establishing the correct technical infrastructure, such as firewalls and anti-virus software is only the first step in guaranteeing Information Security. Training and deploying qualified human resources are the most important, and often overlooked, aspects of this process.

These aspects and more were highlighted during yesterday’s seminar. Professionals tackled the different issues of training employees and arming them with the correct certification to successfully implement Information Security solutions, thereby, enabling them to successfully protect their companies from any internet threats.

The seminar also covered areas of security requirements, solutions and management of these solutions. Tactics for protecting businesses against Internet threats were also proposed and discussed at length.

Speakers at this event included; Heini Booysen from IDC, Samer Omar from I(TS)2, Keven Henry from (ISC)2, Abdul Karim Riyaz from Computer Associates, Luca Bertanglolio from EMEA CISCO Systems, Tarek Abbas from Juniper Networks, Dr. Harald Ahrens from SignCard GmbH & Co KG, Samer Qudah from Al Tamimi & Co. and Hassan Abukubbeh from STS.

The seminar was concluded with a presentation and discussion of a Jordanian case study.

Over 60 people from different business sectors attended this AMIR/USAID funded event sponsored by Juniper. A leading global provider of networking and security solutions, Juniper Networks maintains an intense focus on customers who derive strategic value from their networks. Its customers include major network operators, enterprises, government agencies, and research and educational institutions globally
