* Kempinski in Aqaba, Dead Sea

General Manager of Kempinski Hotel in Amman Philippe De Meyer announced on Monday that the group of Kempinski Hotels & Resorts will inaugurate next April the 5-star Kempinski Ashtar Hotel & Resort in the Dead Sea, with another scheduled in Aqaba in 2007. “Kempinski’s investments in Jordan come due to the prevailed security and stability in the country and to the growth in the tourism sector,” Meyer told Jordan News Agency. Around 50 percent of the Kempinski group’s expansion is in the Middle East and in the north of Africa,” he added. Meyer said the Hotel will host a ceremony on December 10, during which a unique 20-meter cake will be made, adding that the revenue of the ceremony will be donated to charities. The Kempinski group has 45 hotels and resorts in the Middle East and North Africa.

* Aghadeer Agreement

During a meeting held in Amman on Monday bringing together ministers of industry and trade from Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia besides Jordan—signatories of Aghadeer Agreement—, Prime Minister Marouf Bakhit highlighted the importance of the Agreement which is expected to increase the volume of trade exchange among Arab states and raise their exports to the European Union countries. According to the ministers, the trade exchange volume among the 4-member states went up by JD233 million during the first three quarters of this year as a result of the agreement. On the other hand, Industry and Trade Minister Sharif Zu’bi inaugurated the technical unit that will undertake the implementation of the Aghadeer Agreement.

* UAE labor delegation in Amman

A UAE Ministry of Labor delegation arrived in Amman on Monday for official discussions on labor issues. The team attended meetings at the Ministry of Labor during which they stressed the need to expand cooperation in vocational training, transfer of labor and exchange of expertise. Ministry of Labor’s Secretary General Majed Habashneh said Jordan was looking forward to a fruitful cooperation with the UAE. Meanwhile, Egypt’s Labor Minister Ahmad Amawi said on Monday that an Egyptian technical team will visit Jordan shortly to consult with the Ministry of Labor on the employment of Egyptian workers in Jordan. He made the announcement while meeting in Cairo with Jordanian Labor Minister Bassem Salem, who noted that coordination is necessary to safeguard Egyptian and Jordanian national interests.

* Microfinancing for fisheries

The Jordan Hashemite Fund for Human Development has started extending low-interest loans to farmers wishing to open fisheries in the southern Jordan Valley. The farmers can repay the debts over a 15-year period; the fund is set to market the fish harvests.
