Commerce and Distribution
The wholesale and retail trade is the most important
sector for the employment in Jordan with more than 17 % of the active population.
This figure highlights the dynamism of a sector characterised by its diversification.
The food trade is, by far, the segment that contributes most to the global turn-
over of the sector. |
|
A quarter of the total sales registered in a year comes from the foodstuff, immediately
followed by the wholesale trade, footwear and clothing.
E-commerce success stories are generally built on successful traditional trading
companies. This also applies to Jordan, companies producing oriental pastries
rely on a strong domestic demand to support the costs of developing a web site,
backed with an e-commerce solution, to expand their existing market to the global
one.
They succeeded in this thanks to their constant quality preoccupation and to the
special attention they manifested in customer satisfaction. Florists is a profession
with a high connectivity to life special occasions such as weddings and births.
This explains the potential still to be explored by Jordanian florists. Indeed,
many Jordanian citizens have relatives leaving abroad, whose only solution to
congratulate their family and friends is to send flowers. Given the good taste
and know-how professionals of the sector have gain, we can expect to see them
soon going on line.
 |
Their success is even more likely to come since
Jordan has its own domestic flower production. Even better, botanists from all
over the world have a keen interest for the very rare flowers one can find in
Jordan, the black Iris being the most famous, but not only one.
|
Re-export also rose substantially during the past years to reach JD 270 million.
A custom duties reduction policy on some imported goods has been implemented recently.
It resulted in an increase of the number and value of imported cars, this is reflected
in the improvement of the trade value between EU and Jordan.
